Gaerne Shoes

If you head on over to my shoe sponsor's website you'll see this photo! I absolutely LOVE my Gaerne shoes. They fit my feet perfectly. I have an average width foot so some of the narrower built euro shoes don't work on my feet. The boa system is unbeatable as well. Take a gander at their selection and when you order a pair tell them I sent you over. They just may throw in some socks or a t-shirt (no promises, but they're good folks over there!)

Elevated Legs

I'm so honored to be part of the Elevated Legs team! I wear mine almost daily and always after a hard ride. I've flown with them to Texas and California. I'll take them everywhere I drive this summer. It's run by the best people in the industry, Jonathan and Kathy Davis (who also own 92Fifty bike shop in CO). They have been great friends and supporters of my racing and I'm thrilled to be part of their movement!

Mid-Week

It's been a while since a mid-week race fit in my schedule. I'm not sure I did any last year! Corner Canyon was in great shape, the rain at the end of the race was refreshing too!

Whole30

My parents, ages 69 and 70 are doing their first Whole30! I'm helping them with food prep and meal ideas (including occasional RxBars). This is a huge shift especially for my Dad who eats cold cereal and OJ every single morning, he lives on gluten! They are both very thin so they are doing it for health improvements, not weight loss. So stoked for them!

Whiskey Off Road

It was another great year at the Whiskey Off Road in Prescott, Arizona! The town and the race organizers pull out all the stops to be sure it's a weekend full of energy and fun!
Friday night the pros race in the fat-tire crit around downtown Prescott. We climb a hill that is close to 14% grade 10 times! That is exactly where the party is too, the spectators line the street and cheer and there's nothing to do except pedal as hard as you can and smile! I raced my Stan's NoTubes Race Golds with Geax Mezcals at 32 psi for that race. I ended up in 9th. It's always tricky figuring out that race since you are racing 50 miles less than 24 hours later. You have to decide how much to give for the "parade race", but it's so fun that I have a hard time not giving it 100%. Luckily coach Lynda talks me through it and reminds me to pace my energy.
Sunday morning is the big race and I felt more ready to race than I have all year. Despite this race being 2-3 times longer than any other race I participate in all year, I was nervous and thrilled and full of excited emotion. I felt good all the way through mile 30 then started to crack a bit. I finished the main climb up Skull Valley slower than I wanted to. I hit the last 9 miles of single-track expecting to just roll it on home but same as last year I ended up cramping on "cramp hill", how unique! Of course I pedaled through the pain but muscle cramps really "cramp" your style! I was able to finish 12th place with a little last minute sprint with 13th place!  I crossed the finish line depleted, tired and happy to be done! I raced my Jamis Dakota D29 Team for this race as well as the crit. For the 50 miler though, I race the Stan's NoTubes Valor Wheels with the Geax Saguaros at 20 psi. My three points of contact, feet, hands and rear were all happy throughout the race. That's how I know I have the best equipment possible! Gaerne shoes, ESI Grips and WTB Valcon saddles!
Dave Rosen, the marketing director for Jamis Bicycles, flew across the country to take pictures of Team Jamis in Prescott on Friday morning. The Whiskey 50 is the only race that all 3 of us will do this year. You can find some of his photos and some of my snapshots from the day here.
My friend Melissa Hartwig of Whole9/Whole30 did my race support, photos of us are here!

Whiskey 50 publication

Epic Ride’s Whiskey 50 has a small newspaper/publication they put in each registrants goodie bag (along with tons of other great swag). They had a feature called Pro Q and A. I’d been contacted by a reporter about 10 days before the race, here is the article:

Whiskey Off Road with Whole30's Melissa!

My dear friend Melissa joined me for this weekend's race. Together with her husband Dallas,  they created the Whole30 and run Whole9Life. She took time out her busy work and home life to be with me! She left her sweet 1 year old for the first time to help me with pre and post-race nutrition,  general race and moral support. OK, we also had tons of fun since it was also a girls trip; plenty of dance parties, laughing and even a few tears. I couldn't have done it without her this weekend. She made my food, shuttled me to the descent for the pre-ride and many other helpful things the very least of which was doing my race support in Skull Valley! She was also there on the finish line when I couldn't stop crying because I was so tired! Everyone needs a good friend that is willing to go on a race weekend!

Below are the photos from her Whole30 feed on Instagram/Facebook then my photos. But first up you will find the highest circulated photo from the weekend. Dave McElwaine, the journalist/photographer for CyclingNews.com found Melissa during my race and took this great photo of her! He declared her the most beautiful woman of the weekend!

Jamis Factory Team Photo Shoot

The marketing director of Jamis Bicycles came out to Prescott to do our Team Jamis photo shoot. As usual we had a blast out there, my team mates always make me giggle with their comments and antics! This is probably the only time Rotem and I will see Thomas this year so we were sure to get in plenty of laughs!

First Endurance EFS

When I placed my my recent order of First Endurance products, I was notified of a blog contest they were running. I entered my April 2nd First Endurance post and I won! They've credited my account for some additional product and I'm beyond STOKED to be able to order more! Since my last post I've used the Grape flavored EFS in a race situation for the first time and it was even better than expected. I tried it on a few training rides to be sure I liked the flavor, then at Sea Otter I raced with it in all 4 of my bottles. Friends, let me tell you something, it is DELICIOUS! For real! I love grape flavored EFS, simple as that. I had constant energy and I didn't end up with "post-race-tummy-issues".
Check out their Facebook page for new products and flash sales!

Julbo at Sea Otter

This is my fourth year wearing Julbo eyewear to Sea Otter! (2011201220132014). For racing this year I've been favoring the Stunt or the Stony but in my haste, I forgot to grab either of those on my exit from my hotel room. Luckily I always have my Bora Bora's for driving and casual wear. They are super comfortable (and look fabulous!) but I was worried about the lenses fogging since they weren't meant for riding. A few minutes into my warm up for short track, I realized they were working perfectly! I raced in them Friday and when I saw a picture of them combined with my helmet I realized it made a groovy combo! So on Saturday I purposefully wore them for the cross country race! Both days there was plentiful sunshine that the Spectron 3 lens handled with ease! I went from racing to visiting sponsors in the Bora Bora's and never had a second thought about functionality or performance. No matter which Julbo frame I wear, I'm always pleased with the result!

Racing short track

Paths crossing!

Yesterday I set out for a training ride on the trails right by my house. At the same time my Dad took my son and my sister's dog for a hike. Without realizing it we chose the same trail so a few minutes into my ride I got to see my sweet boy!

Sea Otter XC and STXC race report

It was a great weekend of racing in Northern California at the Sea Otter Classic. We had perfect temperatures for racing, unlike some of the past years where heat has been a major issue.
Short Track took place on Friday morning. It was a longer course than last year, laps were close to 5 minutes with a flyover bridge, deep sand corners and plenty of spectators! Despite some very crazy travel (our airplane to Monterey couldn't land so we were sent back to LA to spend 5 hours in a hotel then re-routed to San Jose...) and very little sleep I placed 14th
Saturday's XC race was an hour longer than we normally race. 2 x 17 mile laps. I knew it would take me close to 2.5 hours so I wanted to partition my energy so I could finish strong. I didn't want to lay it  all out there in the first 45 minutes and start going backwards in the field during the second lap. Around 30 minutes in I was stuck behind a train of riders on some climbing single track and I knew I had more, much more. So when it opened up I passed 5 girls all at once! Shortly after I caught another girl and after that I rode mostly alone for the rest of the race. I caught one other girl on the second lap and Erin had a mechanical so I caught her then she passed me back. I kept pushing up every climb hoping it was enough to maintain my position. I rolled across the line in 12th place with a time of 2:33. I felt great after the race and I'm ready to keep the good energy rolling!
I raced my Jamis Dakota D29 Team. A hard tail was the only choice for both races in my opinion. There's essentially nothing technical on the Sea Otter course, just power is needed, so light and stiff is key.  Last year I raced my Geax Mezcals on this course but decided to stick with my Saguaros since some of the climbs seemed a little looser. Am I beginning to sound like a broken record with the Saguaros?! It's true, I love them in every condition!
I was also concerned how my hands, feet, and seat would handle pressure on them for this extended amount of time racing. I'm thrilled to report that everything I use works great for me no matter the distance or intensity. The Mt. Borah custom chamois combined with the  WTB Silverado saddle was comfortable the entire time, I stood up a few times to give my legs a different workout but never because I needed to relieve pressure from my rear! My custom ESI grips kept my hands happy and my new Gaerne Kobras kept my feet happy! All of my equipment is dialed in so I can focus on the race!
