Tips for Fall Mountain Biking

We can hardly believe it, but summer is coming to an end and cooler temperatures are on their way. Don’t fret — there is no reason to hang up your bike for the season! Cooler temperatures, tackier dirt, less-crowded trails, and spectacular leaves can lead to some of the best rides of the year! Below are some tips for getting the most out of your fall riding season.

Look Out For Leaves

We don’t mean the fall foilage, although that is definitely a great perk. Be on the lookout for fallen leaves that can create slick surfaces, hide trail features, and make climbing and cornering tricky. Slow down, use your ready position so you can absorb hidden bumps and rocks, use bike-body separation to keep your center of mass over the center of your bike, and walk when needed.

Light Your Path

The increasingly early sunsets mean that you will need to bring your own lights for evening rides. We recommend carrying both a handlebar light and a tail light (fully charged) as well as extra batteries. In addition, many riders carry a helmet light for added visibility.
